Ъпгрейтнах до Ubuntu 12.04 и както се очакваше проблемите започнаха. Необходима ми е помощ за решаване на някои от тях:
1. Поради калпава комбинация видеокарта (ATI 9600 Pro) и „глупав“ монитор (ProDisma) мога да работя само с драйвер vesa. Само при Ubuntu 6.x картата и монитора се разпознават коректно, при всички по-следващи версии мониторът изключва със съобщение, че не е настроена коректната разделителна способност:

Използването на горния xorg.conf (от Ubuntu 6), независимо дали с ati или radeon драйвер, води до блокиране на монитора. Допълнително в grub трябва да постави „xforcevesa nomodeset“.
Инсталирах gnome-fallback и xfce4, деинсталирах unity.
1. Липсва декорация на прозорците и панел под gnome. Пробвах да задам windows managera-а с „gnome-wm --replace metacity“, но без успех. Със стартиране на gnome-panel и metacity от терминал нещата се оправят. За момента съм ги поставил в Startup Applications. Има ли по-интелигентен начин?
2. Липсва декорация на прозорците и панел под xfce. Не позволява писане в терминал. За момента не се занимавам с него.
3. (!) Крашване на програми и най-вече на браузърите. Firefox се държи що-годе нормално. Chromium тръгва, но се затваря в най-неочаквани моменти, най-вече при отваряне на по-тежки сайтове като ФБ. Chrome не тръгва изобщо, съобщение за грешка „illegal instruction (core dump)“. При опит за трасиране дава:

Стартирането с опции --incognito, --disable-extensions или --safe-plugins не променя ситуацията.

Смятате ли, че инсталирането на gnome-shell (Gnome 3) или Mate ще подобри ситуацията? Някакви идеи?

Не, не смятам. Мисля, че кашата, която си забъркал ще я оправи само нова инсталация.
И месец да пишем глупости в тази тема, няма да има никакъв приемлив резултат.
Смени видеокартата - стари nvidia на 128 МБ се намират за по 10 лева или смени монитора.
В зависимост от останалият хардуер си избери  поддържана дистрибуция и направи нова инсталация.

Картата си е идеална не я сменяй, ама кво е тва чудо на техниката тоя монитор от пред 2000г. ли е? Направо го засили в някоя стена, баси дъртаняна  Има монитори по 70-на лева http://www.impacto.bg/node/1080
