apt-setup ,т.е. виж в /etc/apt/sources.list какво има описано ,ако е

deb cdrom:....

стартирай apt-setup, избери http и после си избери хранилище.

през firefox отварям сайтовете в него без проблеми...
a apt-setup нямам... или поне не мога да намеря приложение с такова име

Ако напишеш apt-get update какво става?  Някаква грешка?Както ти е писал Hapkoc , да не би да ползваш прокси за интернет?Пробвай и през synaptic.

Оправих се... оказа се, че този проблем го има доста хора (google)
Проблема най-вероятно е заради рутер'а ми (в моя случай wrt54gs v1.1 @ dd-wrt v23 но го има и при други рутер'и от този клас. Дори някой беше написал, че като изключил Website Blocking by Keyword от рутер'а си и се оправило)
решението е в /etc/apt/apt.conf да се изтрие реда:
Acquire::http::Proxy "false";

в моя случай остава празен apt.conf
