Иначе идеята на проекта е хубава.Хубава новина :)

by Kevin Carmony
January 4th, 2007
Linspire & Freespire
Light ups in 2006
The end of 2006 marks the 5th year Linspire (formerly "Lindows") has been working to help bring desktop Linux to a broader audience. We all know Linux is a dominant player on servers, and has also found its way to the desktops of many developers and Linux devotees, but it has yet to hit full stride with the mass market, non-technical users. This has been our goal at Linspire for five years now, and remains our goal for the coming years. We want to see more people using Linux on their desktop computers, and that means breaking out of the technical user world, making Linux much easier to use, and getting it pre-installed on more PCs.
In 2006, Linspire and desktop Linux had another very busy year! Here are my own personal "Top 10" of the most important advancements and news stories for Linspire and desktop Linux from this past year:
Eric Raymond
10. Open Source Guru Eric Raymond Joins Freespire Leadership Board
Eric Raymond, well-known as both a theorist and an advocate for the open source movement, in September joined twelve other Freespire Leadership Board members. Mr. Raymond believes desktop Linux is entering into a critical period, noting that historically, users have shifted operating systems during periods of fundamental changes in hardware platforms. Raymond believes the only way to influence ISVs and others to support open standards and open software, is to attract enough end users to make Linux too large to ignore. "There simply aren't enough Linux users today to put much pressure on hardware and software manufacturers," said Raymond. "To attract more users, Linux must support the popular drivers and file types in use today. Freespire is the one distribution I see willing to make this unfortunate but necessary compromise, so I'm happy to contribute to their effort."
9. CNR (Click and Run) Ventures into New Services
Available through CNR, FreeLinuxEmail became the first of many free services to be offered to desktop Linux users. FreeLinuxEmail, an IMAP email and Net file storage service developed by Messaging Engine of Melbourne Australia, provides desktop Linux users a free server-based email and file storage service that works with both web-based and client-based email. IMAP is a superior email protocol over POP systems offered by most free email services. IMAP’s server-side functionality allows email, folders, drafts, templates, and files to be accessed at anytime, from any computer, via the IMAP server. IMAP allows you to read, send and manage all your email and folders from multiple computers, such as from work, home or from a laptop when on the road, yet still use a powerful email client, such as Thunderbird or Evolution. Expect many more announcements on new services in 2007!
8. Biggest Desktop Linux Summit Yet (4th Annual)
The 4th Annual Desktop Linux Summit was wrapped up in San Diego in April and it was the biggest yet. DLS was host to 800 attendees, 30 exhibitors and sponsors, and three packed speaker tracks with close to 40 sessions.
Novell, Red Hat, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Linspire, and KDE were all represented on the show floor - a first for the Desktop Linux Summit.
Also, thanks to DLS sponsor Nine Systems, all 13 keynote sessions were broadcast live over streaming video for those who couldn't make it to the show. More than 1,000 people signed up to watch all or part of these speeches, including Marcel Gagné's opening speech on Barriers to Mass Adoption and Geoffrey Moore's headline keynote on market potential for desktop Linux. Check out the videos yourself here.
7. CNR Warehouse Expands Commercial Offerings
Dozens of PC Applications from commercial vendors were made available via CNR. For example, Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop became accessible on Linspire Desktop Linux through CrossOver Office. CrossOver Office allows Linspire users to install popular Windows productivity applications and plugins in Linspire without needing a Microsoft operating system CD or license. CrossOver Office includes an easy-to-use, single-click interface, which makes installing Windows applications simple and fast. CrossOver Office has become the essential productivity utility for millions of Linux users around the world by supporting the seamless, dependable installation and operation of scores of top-name Windows applications natively within Linux. 6. Linspire Went Multilingual
Linspire announced the digital availability of Linspire 5 in several languages: Deutsch (German), Dutch, Español, French, and Standard English (UK). The combined translation efforts from the community-based desktop Linux localization IRMA Project, with the commercial support from Linspire translation specialists and strategic partners, continues the international expansion of new language offerings.
Mini Koobox
5. Linspire Mini and other Pre-Installed Linux PCs
In June, along with AOpen and Mirus Innovations, Linspire announced the availability of the Linspire Mini Koobox, the first small form-factor Linux machine on the market. Starting at just $399 after $100 mail-in rebate, the Mini Koobox is based on an Intel platform built by AOpen and comes with a full Microsoft file-compatible office suite, DVD player and DVD-playing software, music and photo management software, Internet applications, e-mail and instant messaging capabilities. The Linspire Mini Koobox is now being sold online through Mirus Innovations as part of its Koobox line of desktop computers. For more information about the Mini Koobox, visit www.koobox.com or visit many of our partners at www.linspire.com/featured
4. Linspire Expanded Internationally
Linspire, Inc. expanded its international distribution with a strategic MEA partner - Business International - to bring Linspire's desktop Linux operating system to the Middle East and African markets. The partnership announcement between Linspire and Business International was made at last year's GITEX Dubai 2006 Trade Show, one of the world's top three IT exhibitions. Business International - headed by former Microsoft ME Executive, Mohamad Jarrar - offers the English
Revenue Share
version of Linspire Five-0 and the Linspire Five-0 CNR Edition products directly to consumers, businesses, education and government institutions, as well as provide OEM Edition versions to system builders and system integrators.
3. Linspire Shares Revenue with System Builders
In September, "Linspire sweetened the pot for system builders" by launching a revamped partner program that pays system builders a percentage on all commercial Linux software and services purchased by users of either Linspire and Freespire pre-installed desktop and laptop computers using the CNR technology. Offering 18 months of Revenue Share per computer, the new program also features an automated, real-time, revenue share system that reports computer Light-up data, CNR registration user percentage, and average revenue per-user generated through CNR.
2. CNR becomes a Free Service
In August, Linspire started offering its basic CNR Service for free. After nearly five years of being a paid-for service, this was naturally big news and allowed everyone to experience and enjoy the CNR service.
1. Freespire 1.0 is Introduced to the World
This was certainly our biggest news of the year. Released almost a month ahead of schedule, Freespire 1.0 offers users the ability to choose what software they want installed on their computer, with no limitations or restrictions placed on that choice. By including 3rd-party proprietary drivers, codecs and applications software, Freespire is able to provide better out-of-the-box hardware, file type and multimedia support, such as MP3, Windows Media, Real, QuickTime, Java, Flash, ATI, nVidia, fonts,
WiFi, and modems. Freespire also provides one-click access to legally licensed DVD playback software, games, Sun's StarOffice, Win4Lin, CodeWeaver's Crossover Office, TransGaming's Cedega, and dozens of other commercial products. Freespire is about choice. The user should be free to decide what software they want to install on their systems, be that proprietary or open source.
As I look at our product release schedule over just the next few months, I can see that 2007 is shaping up to be our most exciting year ever!
Thank you to all our users and partners. I wish each of you a happy new year and may 2007 see desktop Linux on more desktop computers than ever before.
- Kevin

Both Debian and RPM distributions will be supported. During 2007, CNR.com will be rolling out support for current versions of the following distributions (listed alphabetically):
• Debian
• Fedora
• Freespire
• Linspire
• OpenSUSE
• Ubuntu
Starting in 2008, other distributions will be added as demand warrants and resources are available.

How is CNR different from other installation systems, such as apt-get, YAST, etc.?
CNR is different from most other software management system in many ways:
• One-click graphical install and uninstall of thousands of programs.
• Automatic update notification and one-click updating of OS components and software applications.
• Program and services management.
• One-click access to proprietary codecs, drivers and software.
• Allows you to buy dozens of different commercial programs, such as DVD Player, StarOffice, games,
accounting programs, Win4Lin, Crossover Office, Cedega, etc.
• Menu entries and desktop icons (optionally) are automatically added when installing and removed when uninstalling.
• "Charts" to easily find the most popular software programs by category.
• Search feature to easily find software programs by name, category, keywords, similar programs, author, etc.
• Clear, easy-to-understand product pages, including:
• Screenshots of programs
• User reviews of the programs
• Description, versions, specs, file size, source, etc.
• User support and help by program
• Release Notes
• Screenshots
• "Aisles" to group applications together for one-click install of multiple applications.
• Dedicated, high-speed server farms with huge bandwidth pipes for fast downloads.
• Friendly naming shown alongside normal package name.
• "Voting Booth" where users help prioritize new software to be added or updated.
• Automated, on-line Publisher Program where anyone can submit software to be QA-ed and tested for inclusion in the CNR Warehouse.
• Automatically retries and fixes any problem downloads.
• CNR has a better than 98% success rate. (The < 2% failures are usually a result of modem dropoffs, in which case CNR will can automatically resume when connected, providing the user with a successful install.)
• Many of the most popular applications are enhanced and improved before adding them to the CNR Warehouse.
• Products and services which are found exclusively in the CNR Warehouse.
• Tracks problem packages on the server automatically, 24/7, and immediately hides the product from CNR users and instantly notifies the maintainer when a problem occurs.
• Easy, one-click access to a program's source code.
• User profiles based upon machine for managing multiple machines per user.
• Local or networked software repository for quick install of same programs on multiple computers on the same network or from a CD.
